Kensington Mine – Stage III TTF Dam Raise
In 2018 we performed a Dam raise in remote South East Alaska at the Kensington Gold Mine for Coeur. The Dam was designed to have a life expectancy of 200 years, and implemented a concrete spillway with a structural fill of roller compacted concrete (RCC) underneath it. With very limited space, a batch plant was setup for producing the structural concrete spillway and the RCC.
Fort Knox – TSF Dam Raise
In 2011 Alaska Aggregate Products was awarded the bid from Kinross Fort Knox to raise their embankment earth dam. This project offered unique challenges, very precise specifications for lift materials, compaction, and density. Of course, these challenges became even greater with summers that had heavy rainfall. Nonetheless, we successfully completed the work required every year until the construction completion in 2017.
Tesoro Refinery Turnaround
Provided crane and heavy haul services for Tesoro at their Kenai refinery. They shut their facility to perform large scale maintenance and upgrades to the existing processing units. Cruz had a total of six cranes onsite for support, which included five 65-75 ton rough terrain cranes and one 230 ton lattice crawler.
KPL Blocked Crude Pile Installation
Installed 70 various diameter (8-12”) piling at Marathon’s KPL facility in Kenai. The piling were driven for foundations so Marathon could install cable trays, flow meters, and control valves which were all a part of the VSM for their tank farms.
Hansen Production Facility

Smith Bay Exploration
In June of 2015 Caelus Energy decided to move forward with a winter exploration program in Smith Bay, Alaska. The primary objective of the 2015 / 2016 exploration program involved drilling two offshore exploration wells to depths near 6,500’ and 9,500’. Smith Bay is approximately 150 miles from Prudhoe Bay and 130 miles from the nearest road.
Umiat Exploration
Over two winter seasons, the Umiat Exploration project included the construction of 202 miles of snow Trail, 20 miles of Ice Road, Five 500’x 500’ ice pads, 18 significant ice crossings, operation of three camps with approximate peak capacity of 120 people, 729 round trip all-terrain vehicle loads for a total of 147,500 miles of travel including transport and support of Kuukpik Drill Rig 5.
NUNA Development Project
The scope of work required for this project included the mobilization and operation of a 75-bed remote camp, mine site development, construction of three miles of on-shore ice road and 10 miles of offshore ice road to develop the NUNA Gravel Road & Pad for Caelus Energy Alaska.
Winx #1 Ice Road
In the fall of 2018 Captivate Energy Alaska selected Cruz Construction to construct and maintain a 12 mile ice road in support of their exploration program. Cruz completed the ice road ahead of schedule and continued to provide maintenance support throughout Captivate throughout their 2018/2019 exploration program.
Badami Ice Road
Cruz constructed and maintained the 27 mile Ice Road in support of Glacier Oil and Gas’ 2017 Badami B1-Starfish Exploration Drilling program.
Anaktuvuk Pass CWAT
Cruz Construction, partnering with the North Slope Borough, is tasked with constructing the Community Winter Access Trail (CWAT) for Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. This program was coordinated between Cruz Construction, North Slope Borough, State of Alaska, and the Bureau of Land Management
Whiskey Bravo Winter Project
Cruz Construction partnered with Kiska Metals in order to construct a 112 Mile winter snow trail. The trail was used to supply the Whiskey Bravo mine with fuel and supplies for their operations.
Doyon Totchaket #1 Exploration
Cruz Marine was hired by Doyon in order to support their exploration program by providing full time transport services for personnel, equipment, and supplies. The Totchaket #1, was located near Nenana, yet across the Nenana River, therefore Cruz Marine utilized their shallow draft marine assets to support the project.
Caelus Exploration Support
In 2015, Cruz Marine, partnering with Cruz Construction, was selected to provide all marine services for the Smith Bay Exploration program. Cruz Marine provided 6 tugs and 5 barges to transport necessary exploration supplies and equipment from Prudhoe Bay to Point Lonely, Alaska. Following completion of the exploration program, Cruz Marine demobilized supplies and equipment back to Prudhoe.
Nuvagapak Environmental Cleanup
Cruz Marine was selected by Marsh Creek to assist with the transport of contaminated material out of the White Alice Nuvagapak cleanup site. This is one of the most challenging areas in Alaska for extracting assets via water due to the extremely shallow depths and extreme tides.
Tok Cutoff MP 38-50 Rehabilitation
This CMGC project was awarded to Cruz in December of 2017. Throughout 2018, Cruz partnered with Northern Region AKDOT to help design and complete the construction package through the CMGC process. In April of 2019 Cruz started construction on this 12 mile section of the Tok Cutoff Highway.
Kiana Airport Improvements
This airport re-alignment project involved re-aligning the existing 3,800 LF RW to 4,200 LF. With no nearby gravel sources, Cruz pioneered and built and 3 mile access road to a nearby mountain where we opened up a 100 acre material site to provide over 700,000 Tons of aggregate for the project.
Dalton Highway MP-362-398 Rehabilitation
This 40 Mile section of the Dalton Highway was split into two projects. Cruz was awarded both projects, the first being in 2015, and the second in 2017. Cruz opened up four separate pits, mining over 4 million tons of gravel in order complete these projects ahead of schedule and under budget.
Road to Tanana
This two year construction project entailed constructing a new 33 mile road that connected the villages of Manley Hot Springs and the village of Tanana. Not only did Cruz construct 33 miles of road, but we also installed a Bulb Tee Bridge and multiple structural plate pipes for drainage. This was the first new road in Alaska in over 50 years.
DSP Campground & Visitor Center
This unique project involved clearing 26 acres, 85,000 cubic yards of excavation, 105,000 cubic yards of Borrow, 2 mile of pioneered road, parking lot, 32 campsites, orientation kiosk, and toilet facilities. The primary objective involved construction and opening of a new campground facility for traveling Alaskans and tourists.
Fire Island
The purpose of this project was to install two submarine cables 3.2 miles between Anchorage and Fire Island as part of the Fire Island Wind project. The cables were to be installed a minimum of ten feet apart and to a minimum depth of 5 feet.
Northern Region Deep Culverts – Stage 1
This project involved replacing deep culverts on the both the Parks Highway and Richardson Highway, Alaska’s busiest highways. These pipes each had unique challenges regarding their size and depth. Cruz completed this project during the summer of 2013 ahead of schedule and under budget.
Grayling Airport
The Grayling Airport Improvements project consisted of replacing the existing 2,800 linear foot runway with a new 4,600 linear foot runway in the Yukon River village of Grayling, AK. This work includes construction of the 4,600’ by 150’ runway, the 325’ by 120’ taxiway, the 350’ by 450’ parking apron, the 1150’ by 24’ access road, and the new lighting system.
Palmer Airport
The Palmer Municipal Airport Project was a single season runway rehabilitation project in Palmer, Alaska This project included 66,970 cubic yards of excavation, 77,200 tons of borrow, 12,000 tons of leveling course, 14,000 square yards of recycled asphalt material, 32,890 square yards of removal of existing pavement, and 6,320 tons of asphalt concrete.
