About

During the summer construction seasons of 2021-2023, Cruz built new infrastructure in Mertarvik, including a 9,000’ runway, taxiway, apron, and 5 mile access road, for the relocated community of Newtok. The work included the opening of a material site and mining and crushing over 1.5 million tons of material for runway construction as well as various roads and pads in the village. Cruz also constructed 21 gravel house pads, gravel pads for the Mertarvik K-12 New School and washeteria, and various sections of residential road for the new village. The project also included construction of two SREB buildings on the apron, extension of existing village utilities, and installation of new airport electrical systems. Cruz maintained the project schedule and budget despite the provided material source containing only 25% of the rock quantity required to complete the project. Cruz worked with local landowners and permitted an expansion of the source in time to avoid major delays.
